FOURNET WINDOWS '95 CONFIGURATION SETUP

If you're a user of Windows '95, you will need to install and properly configure PPP software on your PC to enable it to use the TCP/IP protocol, which is necessary for using Internet browsers such as Netscape and Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Windows '95 uses the same protocol (TCP/IP) as does Windows 3.1 to establish your Internet connection through FOURnet.

Under Windows 95, you have several methods of installing the software of your choice on your PC. You can choose to install your own commercially available software which you may have purchased through a third party vendor. In this case, follow the general instructions under manual installations. If you have difficulty, double check each step before contacting the software manufacturer for help. When you contact their technical support department, you will want to have this information available.

You may also choose to manually install shareware programs which you have downloaded from the Internet. You can follow the same step-by-step instructions for configuring most shareware software. To obtain technical support from shareware program's authors, you will first need to register the program. Contact the program's authors for further information about how to register your third party shareware product and obtain technical support for these programs.

Microsoft has also introduced some utilities which will enable you to easily configure your individual setup, including the Microsoft Internet Connection Wizard.

For the simplest method, FOURnet recommends that you configure your TCP/IP connectivity using the Internet Connection Wizard. You will then be able to download the latest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape directly from the vendor's website. There are many advantages to this method, as you will be obtaining the latest browsers with the most recent bug fixes. You will also be able to repair/reconfigure your connection quickly if you experience hardware failures or if your configuration files are inadvertently overwritten by other software which you install.

FOURnet also makes available pre-configured versions of Internet Explorer 3.0 for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 software for auto-installation. This software is available free for download, or can be ordered for a minimal charge to cover costs of media and shipping if you are unable to download the software from our online distribution site.

If you choose pre-configured software from FOURnet, we recommend that you use ftp ( ftp://ftp.four.net/pub/ppp/win95/msie30.exe) if you have a current working Internet connection or Unix shell access.

Otherwise, using Windows 95 "Hyperterminal" program (which is installed as an accessory with Windows 95), you will be able to connect without a PPP connection directly to FOURnet's Guest Account and download pre-configured software. You will find Windows 95's Hyperterminal program under Start->Programs->Accessories->Hyperterminal.

To use Hyperterminal to download the software, run Hyperterminal, and then dial 295-6340 with your modem. Next, when you are connected, type "GUEST" at the 'login:' prompt (type GUEST without quotes). From the FOURnet Guest Menu, select download file (choose the correct file for your operating system). Be sure to wait for the file to download before disconnecting. The download can take some time as the files are large. To avoid being disconnected during the file transfer, disable call waiting before establishing a connection.

The archive is available in a disk set containing three to five 3.5 inch floppy disks or if you download the file directly from the distribution site, have approx 7 megabytes of disk space available. You will need additional space to be able to extract the files from the archive.

This software has been thoroughly tested on standard Windows 95 operating systems/PCs. Because there are a wide range of hardware system configurations in use, FOURnet and/or Microsoft do not guarantee that the software will install on your particular system. You will then need to use the Microsoft Internet Connection Wizard or Manually configure Dialup Networking using FOURnet's Internet Addresses.

If you have trouble installing, it may be due to hardware conflicts or non-standard operating system installations such as boot menu programs, network cards, disk space or memory compression software, FAX software, or other Internet Software such as AOL, Juno, etc. You should also be certain that your modem is installed and tested prior to installation. If you suspect hardware or operating system conflicts, contact your PC's manufacturer or the vendor who installed your operating system for help with your unique configuration.

Prior to installation, you should uninstall any previous versions of TCP/IP software or any software which requires an Internet connection to function which may have been previously installed on your machine.

Before beginning your installation and going offline, read these important instructions and print out a copy for future reference.. If you're a FOURnet customer and you're upgrading from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95, be sure to download the software you may need and Internet Address information prior to installing Windows 95. Gather all the information which you will need to have to get back online, such as FOURnet's IP addresses, and use ftp to retrieve the Windows 95 TCP/IP Toolkit if you will be using that method to configure your Windows 95 connection.

Download and print this file and FOURnet's IP Addresses prior to going offline and changing your existing connection's configuration.

NOTE: Do NOT attempt to install the Windows 3.1 FOURNET.EXE program with Windows '95. This program was designed only to be used with Windows 3.1. To install Windows 95 Manually, use Microsoft's Plus Pack and/or The Internet Connection Wizard. Also, if you have an old FOURnet Windows 3.1 version remaining on your machine after an upgrade to Windows 95, do not run it - remove it from your machine to avoid this possibility.

The networking software which is available with Windows 95 will allow you to establish a PPP connection with FOURnet. Although extensive 'help' documentation is available within Windows, additional information is required to help you configure your machine correctly. You will need to enter the correct Internet addresses where required in the Installation in order for your machine to be able to talk to other computers on FOURnet and elsewhere on the Internet.

Think of this information as sort of a "return address" that you might need to include on the envelope when mailing a letter. In order to get a response, you need to include your return address information. Otherwise, other machines on the Internet will not be able to talk to your PC!

THE PLUS PACK INCLUDES ADDITIONAL INTERNET UTILITES

A Microsoft Utility addon for windows called the 'Plus Pack' includes a number of useful Internet Utilities. These are:

Internet Setup Wizard: (May make installation easier for you.)
Internet Mail Module: (Fixes Microsoft Exchange to work with email.)
* Internet Web Explorer:	(Microsoft Browser to replace Netscape)
* Dial-Up Scripting: (Automates your connection.)

Manual Installation Procedures

The following information is for users who wish to manually install PPP under Windows 95.

If you decided to download the pre-configured software, you will not need to use these manual installation procedures.

However, knowledge of the steps required, and this installation process may be helpful if you need to troubleshoot your setup. You should keep this information handy offline in case you experience equipment failure or problems connecting. In the event that your files become corrupt, you may need to perform a reinstallation. Sometimes this is also necessary after you've installed other communications/modem/tcp-ip programs on your machine.

DO YOU HAVE DIAL-UP NETWORKING INSTALLED?

Before we begin, find the Control Panel Window. To activate, click 'Start', then point to 'Settings' and finally click on 'Control Panel'. A window should appear which you will be using often throughout this installation.

start -> settings -> control panel -> add/remove programs

Double click on 'Add/Remove Programs'. Select 'Windows Setup'. A list of installed / installable modules should appear. You should verify you have the following modules installed.

Under Communications:

X Dial-Up Networking (TCP/IP stack - required)

If it's not checked, select it and then click on OK. Windows will then install the module.

IS THE TCP/IP PROTOCOL INSTALLED AND ATTACHED TO THE DIAL-UP ADAPTER?

Click on the Network icon located in the control panel. Verify that both the 'Dial-Up Adapter' and 'TCP/IP Protocol' are present. If one is missing, click ADD then adapter or protocol. You should find both modules under the 'Microsoft' Vendor heading.

You will need to verify that the 'protocol' is now bound to the correct 'adapter'. To do this, hilight the 'Dial-Up Adapter'. Click on 'Properties' and then 'Bindings'.

Ensure 'TCP/IP' is checked.

CONFIGURE THE TCP/IP PROTOCOL

Select 'TCP/IP' and click on the Properties Button. You will see a number of tabs, each with a different name. The settings for each 'tab' should be:

IP_ADDRESS

X Obtain an IP address automatically

DNS_CONFIGURATION

	X Enable DNS

	Host:	[Enter your username]
	Domain: FOUR.net

	DNS Server Search Order

		206.53.34.2
		140.186.79.2

GATEWAY

[Leaving the option blank will force your computer to use the 'default'
FOURnet gateway. If you feel you need to enter something here, the
correct IP would be 206.53.34.25]

WINS_CONFIGURATION

	X Disable WINS Resolution

ADVANCED

[Use default settings]

CREATE A DIAL-UP CONNECTION PROFILE

Your modem needs to be configured and installed properly on your system before you can create network connections. Windows should automatically set up your modem hardware during its initial installation. You can verify your modem status by accessing the 'Modem' option under the 'Control Panel'. If there is nothing listed, you can select 'Add' and then specify your modem brand. If you're experiencing problems installing your modem there may be a hardware conflict. Consult the installation instructions in your modem manual for additional information.

Double click on the 'My Computer' icon located on your desktop. A window should open. Double click on the icon named 'Dial Up Networking'.

The Dial-Up Networking window will appear. Double click on the 'Make New Connection' icon.

Give your connection any name you choose. 'FOURnet' will suffice. Choose one of your available modem profiles. If you don't have one, go back to the paragraph one of this section and install a modem profile using 'Modems' under 'Control Panel'.

Before you click Next, click 'Configure'. This window will allow you to specify your speed, etc. There is one important option which you need to select if you do not install the scripting software. It's under the 'Options' tab and is labeled 'Bring up terminal window after dialing'.

Until you install the scripting module, you will want to have this box checked. Otherwise, your computer will call but you will never login to your account.)

Click 'Next'. You will now be prompted for the telephone number to call. FOURnet's main modem pool has two entry points available. You can reach a 14.4k modem by calling 508-291-1774 while the 28.8k's are on 508-291-6340.

Click 'Next' then 'Finish'. You will use the newly created profile and icon to initiate connections at a later time. The profile can also be specified to accomodate programs which have an 'automatic dialup lan' mode.

MODIFY THE PROFILES PROPERTIES

Now that you have the icon, you need to change its properties. To change the properties of the profile, you press the right mouse button over the icon until a small menu appears.

Select 'Properties'. A window with a tab called 'General' should appear. Select 'Server_Type' located in the bottom right hand corner. The type of Dial-Up Server should be 'PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet'.

There should be only two checkboxes marked in the list. Those are:

	X Enable software compression

	X TCP/IP

You should now be able to double click on this icon and make a successful connection!

TRY OUT YOUR PROFILE

Double click on your connection icon. A box requesting your username and password will appear. This information will be used when you install the scripting module (descibed later on in this document.)

Your computer should call FOURnet and display a Terminal Window once it connects. You should see the FOURnet banner message and login prompt. The window will allow you to log in manually until you configure the scripter. To login to PPP, you would type 'slipnet', then 'username' and 'password' similar to below. (Replace the username and password with your account information, making sure that you use lowercase letters for your username.)

Welcome to FOURnet (NETSERV:PORT)

login: slipnet
Connecting to slipnet..
login: username
Password: password

FOURnet maintains an additional document which specifies manual login procedures in more detail.

When you are successful, you will see:

Connecting slipnetXX.FOUR.net via PPP at 38400.

At this point you can click 'Continue' to complete the manual login procedure. The terminal window will dissapear, and your Windows machine will negotiate its IP address and other parameters with FOURnet's server. When a box labeled 'Connected to FOURnet' appears, the connection is up and available for use with programs such as Netscape, etc.

ATTACH A DIAL-UP NETWORK SCRIPT TO AUTOMATE THE LOGIN PROCESS

If you previously installed the Plus Pack, you should already have the scripting software installed. Otherwise, download the scripting program from FOURnet, extract in an empty 'folder' and run the install procedure.

What follows is an example script. Remember that if you create your own login script, Unix is case sensitive. (This means that "password" or "LOGIN" would not work if substituted for "Password" or "login").

You should save the script under:

	C:\Program Files\Accessories\fournet.scp

--- CUT HERE ---
;
; FOURnet login script for Windows Plus Pack.
;

proc main

	waitfor "ogin:"

	transmit "slipnet^M"

	waitfor "ogin:"
	transmit $USERID, raw
	transmit "^M"

	waitfor "assword:"
	transmit $PASSWORD, raw
	transmit "^M"

	waitfor "PPP"

endproc

--- CUT HERE ---

$USERID and $PASSWORD are read from the Connection profile. (When you initiate a connection using your connection profile you are prompted for your username and password. These are the settings the script will use.)

To attach the script you saved to your profile, launch the 'Dial-Up Scripting Tool' which is located at:

start -> programs -> Accessories -> Dial-Up Scripting Tool

Select your connection profile you wish to attach the script to. Click 'Browse' and select the filename you saved in the step above. The other options you may leave unchecked until you are sure your setup is correct. (It makes debugging easier if you can initially see what your computer is doing when it attempts to make a connection.)

Now that you have a script attached to your profile you should uncheck the 'Bring up terminal window after dialing' since you will no longer require this to appear.

WHAT ABOUT EMAIL?

The newest versions of browsers now include email capabilities. If your browser does not support email, upgrade it or you can use an external mail program such as Eudora or Pegasus.

We do not recommend using older versions of Microsoft Exchange for email. Most of our customers are happy using either Netscape or Microsoft Explorer's built in email, or Eudora Lite. Make sure that you've upgraded to at least version 3 of Netscape or Microsoft Explorer to take advantage of email capabilities.

I BOUGHT THE PLUS PACK. WHAT DO I TYPE IN AT THE SETUP WIZARD?

What follows is a list of the prompts and their responses which will allow you to correctly navigate Microsoft's Internet Wizard as provided with the Plus Pack. The 'Clicks' are denoted with a '*' and 'Checkmarks' with an 'X'. Prompts have a '>' in front of them while user input is wrapped with '[]'.
