If you're still using Microsoft Windows 3.1 and you're
getting General Protection Fault errors when you're using
programs, then it's time to upgrade to Windows '95.
|
| We're not saying that this will cure all your GPFs, as
you're likely to continue to get them once you've upgraded whenever
you're using older 16 bit programs. GPFs can be caused by any number
of possible reasons which may be specific to your particular hardware
or software configuration, from your brand of hard drive or
motherboard to the amount of RAM that is installed. |
Memory and disk storage doublers and other programs
which are always resident in memory are particularly notorious for
causing GPFs, as are outdated hardware drivers.
|
You'll probably need to upgrade all those programs as
well.
|
Make sure you're always running the latest software
when you're having problems like GPFs! Often there is a newer release
which doesn't cause Windows crashes and installing the newer version
may eliminate the trouble. Sometimes, however, you'll just need to upgrade
Windows itself to solve your problems.
|
If you've had a disk failure since you last installed
Windows, and you're getting GPFs, then you might need to reinstall
Windows.
|
Microsoft has a Knowledge Base where you can look up
your particular error. You'll find it on their site at http://www.microsoft.com.
|
Please don't ask us about why various programs are
giving you GPFs as these are the best suggestions that we can give
you. Even if you call Microsoft, or your third party program's vendor,
they will tell you to upgrade to the latest release before they will
attempt to troubleshoot your problem!
|
It's something that can't be said often enough - always
upgrade your software to the LATEST version! Most third party
vendors make their upgrades and fixes available via the Internet. It's
the best way to use your FOURnet connection!
