| If you have a FOURnet "Standard Access Account" with both
SLIP/PPP and Unix shell access, then both your PPP and Unix shell account will use the
same login name and password. When you login, you need to inform the FOURnet
Terminal Server which service on the Network you would like your call to be routed for
that session. Once you have an automated login script installed (Windows 3.1 and others)
or if you're using PAP authentication (most newer versions of Windows '95 will use PAP)
this will be an automated process - your dialup script will allow you to click on an icon
to connect. When you use FOURnet's Toolkit to install your TCP/IP software, you don't need to worry about this process as the entire login is automated. Toolkit users who have downloaded the software via ftp from the website should send email to support@FOUR.net to be sure they have a PAP enabled FOURnet account. Unix shell account users do not need to have TCP/IP or PPP software installed on their
machine. Any communications package such as Procomm, Comit, Microphone, or Windows
Hyperterminal can be used with the Unix account. You must have a "Standard
Access Account" for Unix logins. "Express" accounts are PPP-only. |
| The default action if you are logging in manually is to log you into your
Unix Shell account. This is what should occur when you just enter in your username and
password. |
| The following section is useful for users who are not using the FOURnet Installation Toolkit, are installing their software manually by entering IP addresses, or for users of software which uses scripting to effect an automated login. Users of newer versions of Windows 95 with PAP authentication and FOURnet Internet Toolkit users with a PAP enabled FOURnet account may skip the following section. |

| If you do not yet have a Username and Password, you can use the guest
login. At the login prompt, type: guest - no password is required. The guest account has a
different user interface from the normal Unix/Menu shell access or the PPP access
services. |
| To access SLIP/PPP, enter 'slipnet' instead of your username. This will
direct your session to the SLIP/PPP servers and provide you with a new 'login:' prompt. |
| You can then enter in your username and password to start up SLIP/PPP. |

When your software does not provide scripting capabilities, an often simpler method of logging into your SLIP/PPP account is to place a '!' in front of your username.

Most users will be using PPP rather than SLIP, but SLIP is also available by special request.
While Unix/Menu shell access is powerful and fast it is for more advanced users. Our most popular access is PPP. You do not require special proprietary software to access either FOURnet's PPP, SLIP, or Unix/Menu shell accounts. While our pre-configured software may help make your PPP installation simpler, you will then be free to install the browser/email software of your choice. We recommend downloading your favorite browser or email client from the vendor's web site (ie http://www.microsoft.com/ie or http://www.netscape.com or http://www.qualcomm.com).
We strongly recommend against installing free or demo TCP/IP or browser software which you may have received on CD's with books, software, or in the mail. These "free" versions are usually part of special promotional offerings and may install new configuration settings which cause your existing settings to no longer work and may make troubleshooting difficult, or require you to reinstall your TCP/IP software after their removal. If this is the case, be sure that you have removed all other associated TCP/IP software files, paths, etc., before attempting a "clean" installation of your FOURnet software.
For accessing the Unix/Menu shell account, you do not require a fast computer (no minimal requirements), you do not need IP addresses, and you will not need to install TCP/IP or PPP services on your computer.
You can connect to the text-based Unix/Menu shell interface at FOURnet by using a standard communications program such as Procomm, Microphone, Comit, Telix, Qmodem or most modem programs. If you have Windows '95, you'll find Hyperterminal under the Windows Accessories menu. You can use Hyperterminal to call FOURnet's Unix/Menu shell account.
