You can use the information on this page to setup your FOURnet connection quickly if you're already familiar with the basic concepts.

If this is a first time Internet connection setup for you, or if you're not very familiar with your Windows operating system you should use the detailed setup instructions instead.

Be sure your modem has been configured.

If you have not already done so, print out a copy of FOURnet's Internet Addresses.  You can use these same settings to configure your FOURnet Internet Connection no matter which operating system or software your computer uses to connect to the Internet.  FOURnet's DNS server settings, mail server, news server, dialup numbers and your username and password are the only information you need to be able to set up your Internet connection.

PRIMARY NAME SERVER 206.53.34.2
SECONDARY NAME SERVER 140.186.79.2
SMTP, MAIL, or POP3 SERVER mail.four.net
NNTP or NEWS SERVER news.four.net

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Internet.

  3. On the Connections tab, click Connect.

  4. If you do not have an Internet access account, signup for one online using FOURnet's Secure Online Order Form at https://www2.four.net/cgi-bin/form.pl or call FOURnet at (508)295-4139. If you have questions about how to use the Online Order form, you can send email to support@four.net.

You can also print out our printable Order Form which is supplied in PDF Format and FAX it to (508)295-5492 or send it via Postal Mail to:

  5. If you already have an Internet access account, click to select "I have an existing Internet account through my phone line or a local area network (LAN). Help me set up my computer to connect to this Internet account."

  6. Click Next and then click to select "Select this option if you are accessing the Internet using an Internet Service Provider or a local area network (LAN)."

  7. Click to select Connect Using My Phone Line, and then click Next.

  8. Click to select Create a new dial-up connection and then click Next.

Type the FOURnet phone number provided for your modem type when you created your account in the Area Or City Code and Telephone Number boxes, and then click Next. If this number is long distance, click the Use Country And Area/City Code check box to select it before you click Next.

  9. Type the user name and password for your Internet account in the User Name and Password boxes.

Your username is CASE sensitive and should be typed in all lowercase letters.  Your password is the same password that you arranged with FOURnet to use with your account.  Position your cursor at the beginning of the password box and start typing.  Be sure that your CAPS lock key is not on.

Type your case sensitive password exactly, making sure to not use spaces after or before your actual password.  You'll see a series of ********.  Count the stars, making sure there's not more than 8 stars.  If you see more than 8 stars, you've entered your password incorrectly.

Do not check off the "Save Password" box unless you are sure that your password is correct.

If you attempt to login and receive an error message about an incorrect password, come back to this box by following the steps above, and making sure that the "Save Password" box is UNCHECKED. Click Next.

  10. Click No when prompted to change the Advanced settings, and then click Next

  11. Type a name for the dial-up connection  (we recommend your FOURnet username), and then click Next.

  12. To set up Internet Mail, click Yes, and then click Next.

NOTE: You are not required to use Outlook Express as your email program.  You can purchase other email client programs such as Eudora Pro 4.0, Outlook 98, Outlook 2000, or any POP3 compatible email client which is available.  If you purchase a program, included documentation will contain detailed installation instructions or the program's vendor may also have a web site for Customer Support and information.  You can also download free email programs online, such as Eudora Light.

You will be able to use the exact same settings for the FOURnet mail server, your username and password, and the FOURnet DNS settings as are outlined in this document with any email client program you may decide to use.

  13. Click to select "Create a new Internet mail account" and then click Next

  17. On the Internet Mail Logon screen, enter the e-mail account name and password for your Internet mail server in the POP Account Name and Password boxes (not your real name!), and then click Next.

  18. Enter your FOURnet username as the name for this e-mail account and then click Next.

  19. If you want to set up Internet News, click Yes, and then click Next. If you do not want to set up Internet News, click No, click Next, and skip to the next configuration step.

  22. Type your e-mail address (yourusername@four.net), and then click Next.

  23. Type the name of the Internet News (NNTP) server for FOURnet which is news.four.net  and then click Next.

  24. Type your username for this news account, and then click Next.

  25. Do not setup Internet directory service. Click No, click Next, and then click Finish.

Warning:  Don't use your real name, username, or email address on public posts to USENET Newsgroups, in any mailing list or form, provide your email address, username, or FOURnet password to any FREE email service, or don't send it by email to anyone UNLESS YOU WANT TO RECEIVE UNSOLICITED EMAIL.  Many companies on the Internet will SELL YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS! Once you get your e-mail address into one of these email address databases you may start to receive unwanted email.  Be very attentive as to which "FREE" services you sign up for and NEVER give out your FOURnet password to sites external to FOURnet.
